A 50-year-old woman presents to primary care clinic for follow-up after screening colonoscopy. Her colonoscopy showed no precancerous lesions but did show some colonic diverticulosis. She asks you what these lesions are and how they will affect her in the future.

Questions:

  1. Describe the pathophysiology of colonic diverticulosis.
  2. What are the risk factors for the development of diverticulosis?
  3. How would you counsel this patient on how diverticulosis may affect her in the future?
