Progressive partial lipodystrophy. This disorder is characterized by the loss of all adipose tissues in the upper portion of the body. Patients characteristically have the emaciated “sunken cheek” appearance that is seen in the above figure. A frequent complication of progressive lipoatrophy is membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, associated with decreased levels of the third component of complement. The majority of patients are female.
